Samsung’s New Laundry Filter Protects Oceans from Laundry Plastic

In today’s world, people are increasingly conscious of the environmental impact of their everyday actions. However, convenience drives most behaviors–even with ‘conscious’ consumers. Recognizing this issue, Samsung has developed a practical solution to a pressing ecological problem.

Every year, millions of microfibers are released into wastewater systems during home laundry, contributing to the growing issue of microplastic contamination. These tiny fibers are mistaken for food by aquatic organisms, which drastically impacts the delicate balance of our ecosystems. Recognizing the urgency to address this the company has introduced the Less Microfiber Filter, a groundbreaking solution that can work with any brand of washing machine.

Developed in collaboration with Patagonia and conservationists at Ocean Wise, the Less Microfiber Filter is an external device that easily connects to any washing machine.

It is designed to capture an impressive 98% of microplastics that would otherwise flow into wastewater systems and potentially reach rivers and oceans. By utilizing this filter, Samsung estimates that washing four 4 kg loads per week for a year can prevent the equivalent of eight 500 ml plastic bottles from entering sewer systems–which translates into countless tiny plastic filaments being intercepted.

To ensure peak performance, the Less Microfiber Filter needs to cleaned once a month. For easy reminders, it integrates with Samsung’s SmartThings platform, which notifies users when the filter requires attention. They also get bonus points for constructing it out of recycled plastics. Currently available in South Korea at a retail price of KRW 150,000 (USD $117/EUR $108), a global rollout is set to follow in the near-future.

Samsung’s strategic decision to make the filter universally compatible, rather than exclusive to their own machines, amplifies the potential impact of this creative innovation. We applaud their approach, especially taking the high road to make sure all brands–even competitive washers–can use it. The decision proves their commitment to shared global responsibility and sets an example for the industry, emphasizing the importance of holistic solutions for a sustainable future. We hope it sparks a new trend!
