States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), transportation is the number one contributor to the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for nearly one-third of the total carbon footprint. In response, electric vehicle manufacturers are working hard to create affordable transportation options to replace our fossil fuel-hungry cars.

Electric solutions are especially viable in urban areas where people travel less distance overall, and infrastructure exists for frequent charging stations. Of course, traffic and general road congestion slow the average city commute by car, so we’re featuring one of the best sustainable metropolitan transportation options to date: the electric bike.

You’ve likely heard of and even ridden a Bird electric bike or scooter before. The company operates bike- and scooter-shares in hundreds of cities, and users can find and access rides via their app. Bird electric bikes and scooters are a super fun way to commute to work and explore your area.

In addition to its popular bike-share programs, the company sells electric bikes and scooters for private ownership. And, in October 2023, Bird announced its fresh, new e-bike design for personal use. The advanced, urban-focused Bird electric bike is causing big waves among people seeking an affordable, eco-friendly way to get around town. So zip up those backpacks and strap on those helmets — let’s see what makes this e-bike stand out from the crowd.

Accessibility

The re-invented Bird e-bike includes several accessibility features that allow this model to adapt to a broader range of potential riders. First, the aluminum alloy frame is much lighter than the original Bird, making it more agile and easier to ride. Shoppers can choose from either an A-frame or V-frame, and the adjustable ergonomic seat maximizes rider comfort. We should note that despite the customization features, the brand recommends riders are at least 5’8″.

Safety

Just like a regular bike, riding an e-bike includes some risk of injury. As a rider, it’s your responsibility to wear a helmet, stay in the bike lane, and pay attention to traffic. However, the new Bird electric bike takes it further with built-in safety features, including front and back LED safety lights. Plus, the model uses hydraulic disc brakes, which outperform mechanical breaks in stopping power and rider control. Finally, the removable battery is certified by top industry safety standards.

Security

As unfortunate as it is, bikes and e-bikes can be stolen. To help combat theft, the new Bird electric bike includes a fully integrated, 120-decibel alarm system. For context, 120 decibels is as loud as a clap of thunder, meaning you can hear it from miles away. In a rush and forget to turn on the anti-theft alarm? No worries — owners can activate the system through their Bird mobile app. And, should you ever lose your bike, Bird electric bikes have a built-in Vehicle Location System (VLS) to help you track it down.

Design

The new and improved Bird electric vehicle is sleek. Available in either Stealth Black or Gravity Gray, the e-bike is undeniably cool. The handlebar dash includes a backlit LED display, and the battery slides effortlessly into the bike’s frame. The carbon drive train replaces a bike’s traditional mechanical chain, adding to the efficient and smooth design. There’s nothing clunky about Bird’s latest model, making transportation sustainable and downright sexy.

Affordability

You’re undoubtedly curious about the cost of Bird’s new electric bike, especially with the supplemental security and design features. Surprisingly, their revamped e-bike will start at around $1,299, which is pretty affordable considering that the average e-bike costs around $2,000. Compared to a car payment and the rising cost of gas, a one-time payment of $1,299 looks pretty good right now.

The new Bird electric bike can hit speeds of 20 mph, and the battery lasts up to 50 miles on a single charge, proving that e-bikes are a viable, eco-friendly solution to the country’s transportation headaches. Ready to make the switch? The all-new Bird electric bike will be available sometime in spring 2024.
