Is EV Charging Cheaper Than Gasoline? We Did the Math and Found a Winner

Is EV Charging Cheaper Than Gasoline?

As more people consider switching from gasoline-powered cars to electric vehicles (EVs), one big question often comes up: Is charging an EV cheaper than filling up with gasoline? To find out, we did some math, and the results are quite interesting!

The Basics of EV Charging Costs

When you charge an electric vehicle, you pay for the electricity in kilowatt-hours (kWh). The cost of electricity can vary depending on where you live and the time of day you charge your car. On average, the cost of electricity in the U.S. is about 13 cents per kWh.

To understand how this compares to gasoline, let’s look at an example. If you drive a typical EV that uses 30 kWh to travel 100 miles, it will cost you around $3.90 to go that distance.

The Cost of Gasoline

Gasoline prices also vary, but as of now, the average price of gasoline in the U.S. is around $3.50 per gallon. Let’s say you drive a gasoline car that gets 25 miles per gallon. To drive 100 miles, you would need 4 gallons of gasoline, which would cost you about $14.

When we compare the two, it’s clear that driving an EV is significantly cheaper. Here’s the math again:

  • EV: $3.90 to drive 100 miles
  • Gasoline car: $14 to drive 100 miles

This means that, on average, you could save around $10 for every 100 miles you drive by choosing an electric vehicle over a gasoline car.

Other Factors to Consider

While the cost savings on fuel are clear, there are other factors to consider when deciding whether to switch to an EV. For example, the initial purchase price of an electric vehicle can be higher than that of a gasoline car. However, there are often tax incentives and rebates available that can help offset the higher upfront cost.

Maintenance costs for EVs are generally lower as well because they have fewer moving parts than gasoline cars. This means fewer trips to the mechanic and lower overall maintenance expenses.

The Environmental Impact

Beyond the cost savings, driving an electric vehicle also has environmental benefits. EVs produce zero tailpipe emissions, which helps reduce air pollution and combat climate change. By choosing an EV, you’re not only saving money but also contributing to a healthier planet.

So, Which One Wins?

Is EV charging cheaper than gasoline? According to our calculations, yes, it is! With lower fuel costs and additional savings on maintenance, switching to an electric vehicle can be a smart financial decision. Plus, you’ll be doing your part to protect the environment.

As more affordable EV models hit the market and charging infrastructure continues to improve, the case for going electric becomes even stronger. If you’re considering making the switch, now might be the perfect time to take the leap into the future of driving.
