Toyota and Pepco Collaborate on Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) Research for EVs

The Partnership

Owned by Exelon, Pepco serves Washington D.C. and surrounding communities in Maryland. The V2G research will be conducted at Pepco’s Watershed Sustainability Center in Montgomery County, Maryland. Using a bidirectional charger, Toyota and Pepco will design and evaluate various EV charging and discharging scenarios to demonstrate the benefits of V2G technology to customers.

The Research

The research efforts will involve a Toyota bZ4X, an electric vehicle that will be central to the study. The partners will examine EV owner charging habits and vehicle usage. According to Toyota, nearly 80% of EV owners charge their vehicles at home overnight, a period when the demand for electricity is relatively low. Christopher Yang, Vice President of Toyota’s EV Charging Solutions Group, emphasized the significance of this collaboration: “Working with Pepco will help us understand charging and discharging use cases, which will ultimately benefit our customers and help utility providers better understand grid demands.”
