Goodbye Charging Stations? Hello, Longest Range Electric Cars

longest range electric car extended range electric vehicle

Range anxiety is real. The fear that you’ll run out of battery power before reaching the next charging station has proven to be a major barrier for a lot of would-be electric vehicle (EV) buyers. It’s actually the second most important reason people aren’t interested in giving up their gas-powered cars (the first is cost). The thought of ending up stranded is just too much for people to bear.

The exciting news is that across the United States and Canada, there are nearly 64,000 charging stations. Quarterly reports from the U.S. Department of Energy show a growing number of both public and private non-residential charging stations across North America. If that doesn’t help relieve some anxiety, EV automakers are also working hard to simply increase range. Keep reading to learn more about some of the longest-range electric cars available today, heralding the future of sustainable, long-distance travel.

Tried and True, and Now Improved

Of course, one of the standout leaders in the EV industry is Tesla. This is in no small part due to their continued advancements in battery technology. The 2023 Tesla Model S boasts a jaw-dropping estimated EPA range of 405 miles on a single charge. The luxury, all-wheel drive car delivers acceleration to rival supercars, speeding to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, and offers access to Tesla’s iconic software and technology. You might not see too many of these around, however, thanks to their cost, starting at around $90,000.

The Range Winner

The Lucid Air won MotorTrend’s Car of the Year in 2022, and it’s clear why. With an estimated range of 503 miles on a single charge, the extended-range electric vehicle Lucid Air contends directly with Tesla’s dominance and beats out the Model S range by almost 100 miles. With its ability to add 300 miles in only 20 minutes, it’s also the fastest-charging EV today. Thanks to its extended-range battery pack, ultra-efficient powertrain, and sleek design, the Lucid Air has established itself as a luxury EV that pairs high-tech interiors and cutting-edge technology with remarkable range. This award-winning car from the California-based automaker will set you back about $99,000, with the Air Grand Touring Trim starting at more than $138,000.

Off-Road and All-Electric

Rivian, a relatively new contender in the EV industry, is also making waves with its R1T electric pickup truck and its newest R1S SUV. With an estimated range of over 400 miles, Rivian’s R1T is set to be a game-changer for the electric pickup segment. The 5-seater R1S isn’t too far behind, offering 390 miles in range. Combining this impressive range with exceptional off-road capabilities, both models provide a versatile vehicle designed for outdoor enthusiasts who are keen on reducing their carbon footprint. Two other pluses: the unique Rivian design will turn heads, and the price tag for either the truck or SUV is under $80,000.

Familiar Brand with a New Look

Speaking of turning heads, the Hyundai Ioniq series also has a distinctive look. But it’s not just the shape that helps this line stand out. The Ioniq 6 sedan has an EPA rating of 361 miles of range, and what makes the car even more appealing is its affordable price, starting at around $46,000. This rear-wheel-drive SE trim successfully combines a futuristic design with sustainability and performance.

The OG EV with Impressive Range

The Tesla Model 3 base model has a range of 272 miles, but the Long Range model can extend that to 358 miles. Car enthusiasts appreciate the Model 3’s athletic handling, noting that it’s simply fun to drive. The experts at Car and Driver took the Long Range model from 0 to 60 in 5.1 seconds. It’s also Tesla’s most affordable model making it even more attractive. It’s no wonder why the Tesla Model 3 is consistently one of the top-selling EVs in the United States.

More than Just Mileage

Mileage is just one factor to consider. Charging time, price, maintenance cost, performance, and safety features all play a role in the decision-making process when buying an EV. Not to mention, while these long-range EVs are great, the average daily commute for most drivers falls well below their capabilities, making even lower-range cars a practical choice for many.

One thing is for sure though: the age of electric vehicles is upon us. One day EV mileage will surpass the range of gas-powered vehicles. The longest-range EVs today are showing us what’s possible, offering not just a solution to the problem of range anxiety but also providing an exciting glimpse into the future of travel. From daily commuting to cross-country road trips, EVs are proving that they’re more than capable of going the distance.
