These Solar Backpacks Are Changing Lives in Tanzania — One Child at a Time

The Gist:
In parts of Tanzania, when the sun goes down, so does the chance to study. With no reliable electricity, thousands of kids have had to put education on pause at sunset.
Enter: Soma Bags — solar-powered backpacks made from recycled cement bags that are helping kids light up their futures, literally.

Get the full story here.

How It Started

Innocent James, a local social entrepreneur, saw a huge problem:

  • No electricity = no evening reading or homework.
  • Imported solar tech? Way too expensive for most families.
  • Tons of waste from discarded cement bags? Everywhere.

His solution: build a low-cost, solar-charging backpack so kids could carry light home from school every day.
Thus, Soma Bags were born — durable, solar-powered, and built from trash that would’ve otherwise polluted the environment.

How It Works

  • Recycled cement bags form the body — tough, weatherproof, and super lightweight.
  • A small solar panel charges during the day while kids are walking to and from school.
  • The built-in LED light provides up to 8 hours of reading time at night.
  • Bonus: Some models even have a USB port to charge small devices.

Simple, sustainable, and seriously life-changing.

Why It Matters

  • Education wins. More study hours = better grades = more future opportunities.
  • Women win. Local women are trained and employed to manufacture Soma Bags, boosting family incomes.
  • The planet wins. Upcycling cement bags cuts down on waste and pollution.

Real talk: For a lot of these kids, one backpack isn’t just a school supply — it’s the difference between falling behind and moving ahead.

A Few Numbers That Matter

  • 6,000 Soma Bags are currently being made each month.
  • Demand? 13,500 bags a month — and growing fast.
  • 85+ jobs created (and counting) thanks to the project.

Plus, major players like the UNDP’s Funguo Innovation Programme (with funding from the EU and UK) are backing the effort because it hits big global goals like quality education, gender equality, and climate action.

The Big Picture

Soma Bags prove you don’t need a billion-dollar tech lab to solve big problems.
Sometimes all you need is sunlight, scrap material, and a brilliant idea.

One backpack. One solar panel. One child with the power to change their story.
